Mistakes and Payments...

Dan was thumping on his keyboard when Darren found him. Even though he would never admit it to the world, Daniel did have a great voice, it ran in the family. The two Jones' closest to Daniel both had wonderful talent, one being the lead singer of another Australian band. Dan began singing at the top of his lungs.

"What would you do, what would you do if I followed you? What would you...Hey, what are you looking at, she was a happy girl the day that she left me..."

"Danny, you listen to too much Stone Temple Pilots."

Dan turned, slightly unnerved.

"Give it to you to think of something like that..."

"I actually came to ask if you had any idea where we were going to go next...I mean, it's cool to be here and all, but Dag was a little close today..."

"I know...but he wasn't hostile about it...a little poke, but not deadly. However, we're going to go for shock value more than anything. Darren, we are going to Berlin."

Darren collapsed into a chair.

"Berlin? Won't that just help him reaffirm the fact that he wants to kill you?"

"It might, but there are other things waiting for us there. You'll just have to trust me on this one."

Karl and Lee both mumbled under their breaths as they carried the wooden crate to the loading dock, Ben already concealed within.

"Right then, we'll have it in LA be tomorrow night, no worries there...May I ask what's in the crate?"

Karl made a slight choking noise. Lee stumbled for an answer.

"Oh, just some supplies for a band, we're just trying to help them out..."

Seeming satisfied with the answer, he signaled for it to be loaded.

"Another quick thing, you can't let sun his it in any way...The contents are very temperamental..."

"We'll do anything you want for the price you're paying...Want us to read it a bedtime story while we're at it?"

The man dripped with sarcasm, his voice leaving a horrible resonance in their ears.

"No, that won't be necessary, just keep it out of the light..."

Before Lee could replace his glasses, his eyes flashed a bright violet of agitation. Mr. Sarcasm looked startled.

"My God...Did I just see what I think I just saw?!"

"You'll never know..."

Lee placed a hand over the man's eyes, dropping him instantly to sleep, guiding him softly to the ground.

"The things we go through for you Ben...I really wonder if you are worth it some days..."

"Mellina, I'm going out...Would you like something?"

She looked up from her notebook for a moment, finally acknowledging his presence in the room.

"Not really, but surprises are always nice...You remember what I asked?"

"Yes Madame...No killing in your name...However, I must attend to my own needs...If you'll excuse me..."

Dag let himself out the door with a slight bow. Since his episode that afternoon, both had gotten into a heated conversation concerning his behavior. She argued that it was crude the way he was, and what he had done in front of her should be done on his own free time, and not in the presence of others. But it wasn't until she compared him to the 'night walking scum' that he decided to get over it and change.

Dag only took what he really needed, his heart not totally into the job at hand. More than anything, he worried about what damage had been done to his other charge, for Daniel hadn't looked well in the café, but he had refused to speak about it. Truly, coming here had brought something back to Daniel, even Dag saw that, but there was nothing left for him to discover there. They would be leaving soon, and maybe that was Dag's mistake. He never said how long they had to stay, only that they had three days before he would come...Still, that would eventually play into his hand...Le him run until he made a dire mistake, one that couldn't be fixed and couldn't be ignored. Then it would be over...Not without some time though, but they had an eternity of that. There was no reason to rush it, no, no need, he was going to enjoy this.

Darren crept around the side of the building, hoping that no one saw him as he prepared himself. Suddenly, he shot up the wall, stopping at a dead float outside a window. Mellina sat at a table just inside, writing on a paper. He tapped on the glass as she glanced up at him, unsurprised at his sudden appearance. She pointed up with her finger.

"Meet me on the roof..."

He nodded, and shot up easily clearing the top edge of the rooftop. A few minutes later, she joined him, immediately embracing him.

"What are you doing here?"

"I came to see you...And since Dag is being friendly about us..."

"Friendly?! Friendly isn't the right word when you are in his territory. It was fine before because we were in public and he couldn't do anything. Please Darren, he'll be back at any time..."

"Mellina, I will not let him stand between us, I will not..."

"Darren, he'll kill you!"

The door slammed on the floor below as Dag returned back to his flat, finding Mellina gone. She heard as his heavy feet fell on the stairs.

"He's coming...Go now, I beg you...He won't spare you..."

Stubbornly he stood there, folding his arms.

"Let him come...I'm not afraid!"

Dag burst through the door, his eyes flashing metallic anger.

"This will be your last mistake Covener!"

Darren only had seconds before Dag was in front of him. In three steps, Dag had changed to the fur and fang, standing suddenly with Darren's throat in his clawed hand, dangling Darren's feet over the edge. Mellina dared not to yell, but slowly moved towards them.

"Dag, let him go..."

"No Mellina...I warned you of what would happen if he came near my residence..."

Darren struggled against the grasp that held him, turning even whiter than usual.

"Dagmantis, let him go..."

She held a sterner tone this time.

"You want me to?"

His pallid expression never changed, though Darren suddenly went still, his eyes wide. Mellina couldn't hear what was being said, passed between their minds.

'If she says yes, you will have failed, and Daniel will soon be dead...'

She fell silent in thought.

"Yes Dag, I want you to let him go."

An evil smile spread across his face.

'Sorry Darren, guess she has sentenced you...Tell Memnoch I said hello...'

He pulled Darren close enough to feel his rapid breaths before throwing him from his grasp, and over the edge of the roof. Mellina charged to the edge watching as Darren fell, finally hitting the ground. His crumpled form lay completely still in the alley.

"Do not let him near again, Mellina, that is, if he lives...

Another pounding issued from the front of the house as Aaron wandered slowly to the door.

'Three a.m.? Who would ever?'

A large man was standing on the step, a crate behind him.

"A package from Brisbane...Said it had to be kept out of the light. I'm sorry if I woke you up..."

Aaron eyes him coldly as he signed the receipt and showed the man where to put the crate. After being left in peace again, he called for Jay, who was sitting in the basement.

"All the way from Brissy...Think it could be...?"

Aaron shrugged.

"Don't know...Let's open it up and see..."

They began to tear at the wood, pulling it away until they uncovered a sleeping form. Aaron stumbled back, breathing deep.

"It's Ben...They sent us Ben..."

**

Daniel flashed awake suddenly, a distant cry for help ringing in his ears.

'Daniel, help me!'

He rolled from his bed, slipping on a jacket as he went out the door and down the street. Darren's pleading grew as he came closer to where Dagmantis had decided to stay. He began to run as he saw the building, Darren's limp form in the alley. He fell to his knees before him, sighing deeply as the broken form struggled to move.

'Dan, get me away before he comes...He'll kill me for sure...'

Dan gathered him into his arms, and quickly fled back to the flat, laying Darren gently down on a bed. After doing as much as he could, he dialed the airport, gaining tickets to Berlin as soon as possible.

"Don't worry Darren, he won't kill you while I'm here..."

**

"You bastard! You knew I was going to say it..."

"Don't you dare call me that...I warned you of what I was, and you knew the consequences of crossing me. Keep him away from me, and he'll live. Daniel is the one I'm after..."

Her gaze turned suddenly cold as she turned and walked out of the room, ideas running through her head.

Dag rested his body on the bed, his eyes wandering the room twice before he shut his eyes and began slipping into oblivion. Mellina watched him from the doorway, waiting until he was fully asleep before approaching him again. Climbing onto the bed, she began to remove his shirt, feeling him begin to stir. She straddled his waist as he opened his eyes.

"Dag, I've been thinking about all this, and maybe I handled it the wrong way..."

She helped him slide out of this shirt before letting an evil grin cross her face. She forcefully grabbed one of his wrists, cuffing it to the bed.

"I didn't use nearly enough pain...I'm going to make you wish that you had never met any of us!"
